Ezri

Dani, you promised you wouldn't kill me.....

90 percent of the DS9 Trek world knows me as a vehement Ezri hater. I make no qualms about it, I won't deny it. My sig even reads "1 of 3 of the 'I Hate Ezri' trio" *waves to Naomi aka 2 of 3 and Mel aka 3 of 3*. Some ppl have asked me why I hate Ezri, and I've explained. So for the last time (this way I won't have to repeat myself anymore! ;-), here is my full explanation/rant on why I can't stand Ezri.

Ira Behr's mistake (or how Ezri showed up in the first place):

Terry Farrell wanted to move on after her contract ended at the end of DS9's sixth season. Jadzia Dax was killed off in "Tears of the Prophets" (sixth season finale). Ira Behr and TPTB decided they needed to fill Jadzia's spot in the main cast. There was a short debate about would the new character be the next Dax host. Many hoped it wasn't, due to the fact that the new host would cause tension because everyone would still be grieving for Jadzia. I sincerely hoped it wasn't. But TPTB ignored us (par for the course) and hired on Nicole deBoer to play the new host, who they christened Ezri.

My thoughts pre-season seven:

I was furious when Jadzia died and I had a feeling I would hate the new host. Despite all this, I went in with an open mind. Sure, this Ezri wasn't going to be Jadzia but maybe she'd be okay. Was I ever wrong....

Whine, whine, whine:

Third episode of season seven - "Afterimage". Garak was having claustrophobia problems again, so Ezri had her first "patient". True, Garak wasn't too nice to her but then he wasn't in his right mind at the time. Meanwhile, Miss Ezri herself was having "problems" and couldn't "deal". Some of the others (Kira, Ben and especially Worf) were kinda uncomfortable because they were remembering Jadzia. Did Ezri care about them and give them space like a true counselor would? Oh no, she was too busy whining about HER problems when she wasn't attempting to give advice to Garak (attempting being the operative word here). Especially in regards to Worf--he didn't want to talk her right away (obviously). Did Ezri give him that consideration? Oh no, she couldn't even have that, she started crying like a spoiled baby--when he was still GRIEVING for Jadzia!! THEN she goes to Sisko, wanting a transfer off DS9. Why? "I can't handle this, I can't take this, Worf won't talk to me."(*) In a word - AUGH!

Dax a ditz - it isn't right!:

As if the constant whining wasn't enough, they had to make Ezri a ditz. Not a total valley girl-type ditz, but more of a really annoying cute-little-kid-who-always-states-the-obvious ditz. A perfect example is in "Chimera", when the group is trying to think of a way to make conversation with Laas, Ezri bursts out of nowhere with "I always wondered what it would be like to fly through space like that" (as Laas did in the teaser). And that has exactly how much signifigance to do with the point of the episode? Then later in the same scene, she's the first to "pretend" admitting that they were "messing" with Odo to infuriate Laas. A sarcastic "oh yes, that's exactly what we had in mind" would have worked perfectly. And what do we get? A whisper of "you've seen through our evil plan" like some little kid playing a game. Cute, Ezri. But in Kira's very true words, IT'S NOT FUNNY!! A Dax can be cute, a Dax can be sweet, but we DON'T need a Dax who's a ditz!

Ezri and Julian:

The one halfway decent thing involving Ezri (halfway because Julian was the decent half!) Okay, my only problem with this was that they rushed into it. They went from "Penumbra" where Ezri gave into Jadzia's memories and had a one-night stand with Worf (*gags and glares at TPTB*), to "Umbra/Til Death..." where in delirium, Ezri says "kiss me, Julian...." to her and Julian avoiding each other for a few episodes to sucking face in the 'lift in "Dogs of War". Then in the finale, ONE episode after they agree to handle things like adults and have aforementioned very long kiss, they're in bed together! Not that I care, but what's that going to say to the prudes out there? They'll bitch because two regular characters are getting it on the day after they get together and if TPTB is dumb enough to listen, there goes any hope of more real, mature, lasting Trek romance. (Of course, note that several of such types seem to condone ABOTW one-night-stands, yet are offended if two regulars go any farther than holding hands and kissing! As if that makes sense!) But that's off the subject....this pairing would have flowed much better if it hadn't been rushed into. They gave Worf and Jadzia at least a few months, hell they gave Odo and Kira SIX YEARS (!!!), why'd they have to rush into this one?? Taken slow, I would have probably fully liked it (aside from one half of the couple, that is). To sum it up, J/E nearly flopped because the writers pushed it too fast.

So there you go--for the curious or anyone else who happens by here. I'm not used to writing these so pardon if my thoughts are jumbled or out of sync. If I mixed up any of the details, (i.e episode names in the wrong places) please feel free to correct me! However, I will say right now that I do not want any flames. This is a rant, not a fanfic--therefore I'm not "correcting" it, other than the exception noted above. You will not change my mind about Ezri, so don't waste your time calling me names/insulting my intelligence/whatever. If you think Ezri's great, fine. That's your opinion and you have every right to it--as I have mine. Only Dani and Anna may do any harm to me (and just remember, Dani, you *promised* Julian could patch me up when you were through! ;-) Any hate mail will be immediately given to my kitten to chew on (note--she is teething and I'm tired of her chewing on my fingers ;-)

(*) this is my paraphrasing of her actions in that scene--not her exact words, with the exception of "Worf won't talk to me".

Obligatory B.S. - yatta yatta--Ezri belongs to Paramount, yatta yatta--the rant is mine. yatta yatta--any questions, mail me below, yatta yatta--as for the pic, I don't know where it's from--Brit sent it to me as a joke (long story), so if it's yours, I will certainly ask permission for continuation of use.

Questions, comments? (no flames, please--I have a right to my own opinion, ya know)
